The ‘No-Limits’ Tank Review

I mentioned in my Chic and Fit 2014 challenge update that I happen to own both the Lululemon ‘No Limits’ tank, as well as the Target version of the ‘No Limits’ tank.  You may or may not have already heard about the ‘No Limits’ tank before, but let me tell ya…there is a lot of hype about it and it lives up to it all!  So what’s the hype you ask??  Well…let me count the ways (or if you will, the pro’s and con’s):

1.  PRO: It’s a bra and a tank top, all-in-one, without the bulk!

2.  PRO: It’s got a great design and perfect for working out in warmer temps. Built-in ventilation, so to speak.

3.  PRO: It’s slouchy, so it can sit at your waist, or be worn long so that it sits at your hips.

4.  PRO: The support is amazing!  I didn’t feel like I needed a second sports bra underneath.

So, what’s wrong with it??  Well, the price quite frankly.  Lululemon takes $64 + tax of your hard earned dollars for each of these tanks!!  While $64+ is not a completely outrageous price, it is on the higher side for a workout top.  I was fortunate enough to receive this tank as a Christmas gift, but hesitated otherwise, whenever I considered purchasing one for myself.

Imagine my excitement when Target came out with their ‘No Limits’ tank dupe!  I present you with the C9 by Champion, Women’s Layered Tank with Bra:

Screen Shot 2014-06-24 at 11.23.55 PMNow, after researching this top for this blog post, I realized that this exact version is NO LONGER available at Target.  The new version has a drawstring bottom, but otherwise, is still fairly similar to the ‘No Limits’ tank:

Screen Shot 2014-06-24 at 11.24.39 PMSo, how does the Target version compare to the Lululemon original?

1.  PRO:  The design USED to be nearly identical, but is now similar enough to make me consider buying it.  The two major differences: a drawstring bottom and placement of the tank top attachment to the bra.

2.  PRO:  The Target version also has the peek-a-boo action that so many women love:

Me: Wearing the Target version.

3.  PRO:  The length, much like the Lululemon version, is great for wearing low at your hips, or at your waist for a slouchier fit:

4.  The price is so amazingly affordable! Each top is priced at no more than $22.99!  Give me 3!

AND!!  These tops (among other items at Target) are currently buy one, get one 50% off!  Even better!! #winning 😀

So what’s wrong with the Target top??  Sigh, the support leaves much to be desired.  I did have to wear another bra underneath to get the support I wanted/needed, which really defeats the purpose and design of the top, in my opinion. One thing to consider is sizing down.  So if you normally wear a ‘large’, perhaps consider wearing a ‘medium’ instead?  Definitely worth trying!

In general, both tops have decent quality. I didn’t notice a huge difference in the quality of the fabric, nor in their ability to absorb sweat.  The two are really neck and neck in terms of looks, quality, and design.  My one complaint about the Target top, was – as I mentioned before – the support.  But at $22.99, you can afford to buy a $9.99 thin-strapped C9 by Champion for Target sports bra to wear underneath, still save money by not spending the $64 on a the Lululemon version, and call it a day. 😉

Le sigh.  But, ‘I can’t stop thinking about the Lululemon version’, you say.  ‘All the cool girls are wearing the Lululemon ‘No Limits’ tank’, you say.  If you HAVE to have it, then eBay is the place for you.  That’s where I got my second ‘No Limits’ tank, prior to finding the Target version, but after getting hooked on the original ‘No Limits’ tank I got for Christmas!

Lululemon ‘No Limits’ tank purchased on eBay

I only paid $18 for this tank and it was barely used!  A quick search on eBay just now shows that there are some very affordably-priced ‘No Limits’ tanks in pre-owned condition!  This one I found is currently priced at $9.99 and only has 2 days left for the auction.  There are lots of others like this one too!

So, now that you are able to make an informed decision, I hope that you will buy which ever version floats your boat, so long as you get up, get fit, and get active!  Chic and fit!!

Feel free to comment below if you have any thoughts on these tops, my review, or simply if you think I may have missed something important.  Otherwise, come say hello on Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter! 🙂

Swoozie’s Blogger’s Event!

On Wednesday, I attended my very first ‘blogger’s only’ event!  Those of you following along as I walk along two parallel paths in life – 1) the scientist/PhD/researcher path and the 2) fashion/lifestyle blogger path – know that this is the very first event I have attended as a ‘real blogger’!!  Wait, actually, I have a third path…motherhood/wifehood (wait, those are two paths, haha!)! 😛

Anyway, it was super cool to get the ‘blogger’s only’ for ‘Birmingham’s best bloggers’ invite!  Eeeep!!  I’m among the best!  Yay!!  This, of course, coming off the heels of my attendance at Birmingham Fashion Week as a blogger/press/media!  More on that to follow in an upcoming post!  Curious?  Check out this guest blog post I wrote for Lotus Boutique!

Anyhow, so this event.  In Birmingham, we have this store…Swoozie’s.  Cute name, right?!  So, Swoozie’s is a gift and social paper retailer in the Birmingham area.  There are 7 other locations, in Georgia, the Carolinas, Florida, Colorado and Texas!  They also have an online site.  So…this event.  Sorry, haha, I get easily distracted, apparently!!  Squirrel!!  Hahaha, okay, ENOUGH!

AN-Y-way…Swoozie’s!!  I arrived at the event having only had 15 minutes to get ready, so I went with basics.  Black harem pants, a red pleated top, animal print heels (because, really, WHO can tell the difference between cheetah and leopard prints?!!), a gold fringe necklace, Stella and Dot hoop earrings, and lots of bracelets!  You’re not a real fashion blogger if you don’t wear every bracelet you own, haha! Just kidding.  No but really, I was wearing like 6 altogether.  I also wore my usual top knot.  Anyone studying biostatistics could easily use me as an example for explaining what Bayesian statistics is all about, haha! You know…because I wear my hair in a bun almost everyday!! So, this is what I ended up wearing to the event!

My Photo Grid collageI arrived at the event, and was greated with my very first SWAG bag!!  Eeeeeep!! I was so excited!!  Check out the goodies I got!!

0430142034c-1Um, okay, so I may have added a napkin from the food table that I thought was cute, as well as new notebooks that I picked up at the event with my exclusive, ‘blogger’s only’ discount (both were not originally included in the swag bag, but they make the picture look cuter, right?!). 😀

NEXT, I made a beeline for the food table.  Check out the food table!!  If you know me well, you know that I do NOT pass up an opportunity to eat, so just know that I may or may not have eaten the crab cakes that are missing from this platter…oops!!  In my defense, it WAS dinner time.  Okay, maybe it wasn’t, but I hadn’t eaten dinner!!!  JUDGE ME! Hee hee!

0430141844The event was lots of fun!!  I met a variety of bloggers there!  Fashion, food, lifestyle, etc…a fun and diverse group!

Krista Colin and Alicia Rohan from KC Projects, LLC, as well as other new blogger friends!

The event focused on giving us tips for becoming the ‘Hostess with the Mostest’, both socially as well as digitally.  I didn’t really capture too much of the digital hostess goods (e.g. business cards, personalized stationary and other items), but here are the social hostess items I thought were cute!

ChewBeads!! Have you heard of these?? You wear them as jewelry, your baby chews on them while toting him/her on your arm, and then you throw them in the dishwasher and voila! You have a clean necklace to wear again!

Cute decorative pieces like this one! SO relevant in our household, since our little one has YET to sleep through the night consistently! Oh woe is me!! :((

Birmingham_HousewarmingI have to tell you, this blogging ‘thing’ has been such an amazing experience thus far!  I never thought I would have a hobby I loved, but I can honestly say that this is one of the most fun-filled experiences/hobbies, I have ever had!  I *may* now understand how my hubby feels about golf.  Maybe… 😉

Keep an eye out for my upcoming post on Birmingham Fashion Week (yes, I know, SOOOO overdue!!), as well as my post on staying ‘Chic in Academia’ while pregnant or nursing (ALSO WAY OVERDUE!!)!!!  I’ve got about a 1-week window before my grant writing takes over my life again, so look for these posts in the upcoming week!  In the meantime, follow along on Instagram and Twitter for daily workplace outfit inspirations, as well as my SALE ALERTS peppered throughout!

Thanks so much for reading and…Stay Chic!!

A Cinderella Moment with Lotus Boutique!!

This past week, I attended Birmingham Fashion Week for the first time…as a blogger!!!  Last year I attended simply as a guest, and the experience was much different than it was this time.  I had so much fun this year; it was super exciting and so amazing!!  In preparation for Fashion Week, I wanted to make sure I planned fun outfits for each night.  Cue: Lotus Boutique!!

Lotus Boutique was amazingly gracious!  I was able to wear three looks from their current in-store collection!  It started out with a visit to the Lotus Boutique at the Summit to pick out some outfits. For those of you who haven’t been to the Lotus store at the Summit in a while, be aware that they are no longer located over by Sephora and Gus Mayer, but rather next to Gap, and in the same suite as the Halcyon Day Salon & Spa!

041714102304171410250417141025aSo, I got started! Selecting only three outfits was by no means an easy task!  There was so much to choose from!  Check out some of the cute things I saw:

0417141028b 0417141032a 0417141031 0417141030c 0417141030a 0417141029d 0417141029b 0417141029 0417141028 0417141027c 0417141026a 0417141026 0417141025b0417141033 0417141034 IMG_20140417_121939I made my choices based on uniqueness if you will.  I wanted pieces that people wouldn’t think to pair with a metallic jacket, or with a peplum top.  I also wanted pieces that spoke to my style, which is fun and feminine.  In the end, I selected a few things:

All of the outfits were so fun to wear and fit so well!!  I am SOOOOO grateful to Lotus Boutique for making this experience such a memorable one!!  I had so much fun styling all three different looks!  Here are the three looks I put together with pieces from the Lotus collection:
