Two outfits under $10!!

A few weeks ago, I was invited to visit America’s Thrift Store in Gardendale, AL.  With a $50 budget, I set out to see what treasures I could find.  Now, this was not my first time at the rodeo, so I had an idea of what types of items I was interested in and what things I needed to keep in mind while shopping.  Here are a few of my tips for thrift store shopping:

  1. Use signage to guide your shopping:  Thrift stores can be overwhelming.  Rows and rows of racks packed with clothes often characterize these stores.  Thankfully, they are often marked with signs (e.g. Tops, Skirts, Dresses, etc), to help guide your shopping.  If you have an idea what you’re shopping for – perhaps you are looking for an interview suit or a dress for a wedding – then use the signs to help guide your visit that day.  In my case, I was open to everything and anything, so I shopped ALL the areas of the store. 😀
  2. Know the store’s discount policy and pricing for the day:  Thrift stores often have discounts they offer on certain days of the week.  Thursdays may be the day they discount all blue tagged clothing an additional 50% off, for example.  So, before you begin shopping, know what color tags have additional discounts.  This is especially helpful if you are shopping on a budget.
  3. Inspect all clothing carefully:  I cannot emphasize this enough.  I once found a pair of designer jeans that were priced at $5.  I was super excited until I got home and realized they had a huge gash on the inner thigh area and were completely unusable.  Sigh.  So, carefully inspect the clothing for holes, stains, tears, the works.  It will be worth the extra two or so minutes to make sure you’re actually getting a good deal.
  4. Wear fitted clothing:  This may sound silly, but you some thrift stores don’t have fitting rooms.  They do, however, often have full-length mirrors.  So, if and when they are void of fitting rooms and you want to make sure a garment is going to fit, you’ll want to be able to try the garment on over the clothing you are wearing.  This may mean wearing a fitted top and leggings if at all possible.  This will allow you to try on dresses, skirts, tops, and jackets.  Pants get a little trickier.  For pants, it helps to wear flowy skirts so you can try them on underneath the skirt.  Which begs me to tell you about the next tip…
  5. Plan head:  If you know you will be shopping for pants, plan to wear a skirt so you can try those pants on even if you don’t have a fitting room to use.  Also know what price you are willing to pay for said pants.  Have you already checked clearance racks at your favorite retailers?  A brand new pair might be priced similarly or sometimes less than what you might find at a thrift store…and they pants will be brand new.  So, do your research in advance of your visit!

So, with these tips in mind, I got to work.  I found A TON of stuff.  I’ve been meaning to post all my finds, but time has gotten away from me, so I’ve only managed to photograph two of the looks thus far.  That said, they are probably the best two looks I found at America’s Thrift!  The first look is a suit from The Limited.  The suit was originally $5, but was marked down an additional 50% off that day!  Score!  I wore it to an important meeting last month and loved how it fit, looked, and most of all, how versatile it was.  I wore the suit on the first day, then wore the jacket with a different outfit the second day.  A $2.50 suit and two outfits!

I also found a brand new (or maybe used once) Ellie Tahari dress which I wore to a wedding this past weekend.  I gasped when I saw how much it was…$5 buckaroos!!  I could not believe it.  I’m telling ya, treasures await your discovery at these stores!!

So, if you’re looking for a good thrift store experience, be sure to visit any of their seven locations in the southeast!  Also, if you happen to have items to donate, you will get an additional 10% off your purchase.  So, be sure to keep them in mind next time you are in the thrifting mood, OR on a super limited budget for clothes-shopping!  Finally, stay tuned for the second round of outfits from this shopping trip.  I’ve got 5 other outfits to show you from this single trip and my $50 budget!

Chic and Audaviv

Audaviv Feather Necklace

IMG_1214

This past month, I wore a piece by jewelry designer brand Audaviv.  The name – albeit unusual – has Latin roots: “auda” means audacity and “viv” means life.  Living life with audacity!  Love.  Audaviv reached out and after learning that the owner is not only Latina, but also CEO of this unique jewelry company, I could not refuse the collaboration!  Not long after we spoke, a gorgeous piece of jewelry arrived.

The piece: a delicate, gold-plated feather necklace.  Stunning.  Often, as a fashion blogger, I am known for my chunky costume jewelry pieces, so this is a nice change for me. Understated, sophisticated, and well…chic! And pairs so well with everything!  I wore it for the first time a couple of weekends ago.  No need for fancy outfits with this one, the necklace stands out even if only wearing a t-shirt!

Founded in 2014, Audaviv is the online destination for jewelry enthusiasts. At Audaviv, you’ll always discover jewelry from up-and-coming designers and independent brands. Audaviv brings you jewelry that is modern, beautiful, high-quality and reasonably priced.

Always made with care, Audaviv jewelry is never mass produced or sold at big-box retailers.

When shopping at Audaviv, you can count on a highly personalized and attentive experience.

The site is filled with similar delicate and beautiful jewelry.  This particular necklace retails a mere $32 and is not yet sold out!

The pieces are unique from month to month and the ones available now are running out fast, so don’t wait too long!  Plus, the prices are rather unbeatable for the quality and design, so they are definitely pieces you won’t want to miss! Happy shopping!

How I made an easy, extra $200 last month with ThredUp

Ask anyone who knows me, and they will tell you that I am always on the lookout for ways to make extra money.  ALWAYS.  My hubby is also known for this…likely one of the things that makes us highly compatible!

Once upon a time, I was an avid eBay seller.  One summer, I made $2000 just from items sitting around in my house!  Two kids, one faculty position, and one side hustle as a fashion/lifestyle blogger later, I have found myself unable to dedicate the time needed to photograph, list, and ship items sold on eBay.  As my bff put it, “Your time is worth a lot more these days.  You need to focus on efficiency.”  And, so I did.

Part of my path to efficiency involved de-cluttering my home.  Over thanksgiving break last year (2015), I began to de-clutter.  I finalized the de-cluttering process over Christmas/NYE break.  I emptied out all closets, made piles, and figured out what needed to be donated, sold, or thrown away.  I also enlisted the help of an amazing service that both sells and donates clothes for you!  ThredUp is the service I used and it has been an amazing way for me to get rid of stuff taking space in my home.

I first tested the service back in August of 2015.  I ordered a single bag.  I filled it with clothing I definitely hadn’t worn.  Honestly, I filled it with stuff I didn’t think would sell and that I was planning to take to the Salvation Army or similar donation location.  To my shock and surprise, the bag actually yielded $16.35 cents!  That’s a few days worth of my coffee splurges at Starbucks!!  Score!  So, I ordered four bags after that.  They sat around for a few months until I got through all the items in my house, but eventually filled them and shipped them out.

ThredUp accepts clothing, handbags, shoes, and accessories.  Women’s and children’s clothing only, but in our family, that’s half the clutter battle!  So, after the New Year, I filled up all four bags with clothing, etc. and dropped them off at my local FedEx/Kinko’s location.  Mind you, you can also schedule an at-home pick up.  Sadly, the cats in our neighborhood tear up every plastic bag they come across, so I didn’t want to run the risk of having the bag torn apart before it even shipped.  Darn neighborhood cats!

On January 26th, four of my bags were received.  It takes them about two weeks to process, which includes taking inventory of your bag, photographing items they will sell, determining how much to pay you up front, and donating the rest.  IF you don’t want to commit to donating items they won’t accept and want them to send them back, you can pay a small fee (~$13) to have them ship back the items they don’t take.  This, in my opinion, prevents you from fully purging and de-cluttering, but if you feel that you simply cannot release complete control to ThredUp, then they will gladly acquiesce and send you your stuff back. 🙂

Now, onto the money-making part.  In full disclosure, before I sent items to ThredUP, I sold to two local consignment stores: Style Encore and Plato’s Closet.  Both Style Encore and Plato’s give money on the spot, so I figured that was the best/quickest return on my investment.  Anything they did not take, I immediately put into the ThredUp bags and off it went.  Over the course of two weekends, I made $500 selling to Style Encore and Plato’s Closet.  The four bags I sent to ThredUp have since been processed and I have been promised $204.85!  In total, thus far, I have made $704.85 from stuff that has been sitting around in closets and other places in my house for years!!  That, my friends, is how everyone should roll. 😉

Four bags, 12-23 items accepted per bag, average $37.64 payout per bag.  Not too shabby!

I currently have an additional 9 bags processing (potential to make at least another $300), and ordered an additional four, which I will use to send clothing the boy’s no longer fit into.  All the while, the most effort I have put into this is sorting clothes, filling bags, and taking them to FedEx.  They take care of the rest!  I for one, fully endorse this efficiency. You should too.

One additional note:  Any money you make goes through an embargo period, wherein you are free to use the money to shop on their site.  This is approximately a 14 day period, after which, you can withdraw the money and deposit it in your bank account using Paypal.  I am patiently waiting for my $204.85 to clear so it can sit happily in my bank account. 😀

If you should choose to buy, know that there are some pretty amazing things you can find, including hard to find items that have either been discontinued or can no longer be found on other sites like eBay or Poshmark.  I found the red dress in the graphic below on ThredUp!  Also, if you sign up using a referral link, you get a $20 credit just for joining. You can use mine if you’d like.  I get $20 too, so we all win!  Referral link, here: ThredUp.
